Fairbanks Area Ground-Water Information

• Long-Term Ground-Water Data Collection Sites
  • There are only a few long-term data collection sites in the Fairbanks area. All of these sites but two have been discontinued. The USGS funds and maintains a monitoring well on McGrath Road. Two past wells, B61 and DOTII, were maintained under the same USGS programs. A fourth well has been maintained as a volunteer effort by Dennis Trabant since 1977. This well is currently monitored under a cooperative effort by Dennis and myself. The following hydrographs illustrate the changes in water levels over time. A comparison between these wells is shown in the combined plot to help answer questions about regional relationships due to climate conditions.

  • Observation Well B61 hydrograph
    • Data collection for this well was ended after the site was repeatedly vandalized
  • Observation Well McGrath hydrograph
    • Data collection is currently supported by the USGS, no 1999 data is currently available
  • Observation Well DOTII hydrograph
    • Data collection for this well was ended due to reduction in funding
  • Domestic Well Trabant hydrograph
    • Data collection for this well was temporarily stopped due to well maintenance problems from 11/93 to 5/99
  • All 4 Bedrock Wells Plotted Together with Total Snowfall
    • Recharge to bedrock ground-water aquifers is dependant on periods of heavy snowfall
