Fairbanks Aquifers Information

The aquifers in the Fairbanks area have been discussed in local detail since the early development of Fairbanks in the 1920's. Anderson, 1970, was the first person to map hydrogeologic units across the Tanana Basin. The Chena Alluvium is the geologic formation which best describes the alluvial aquifer system in the floodplain encompassing the Fairbanks and Fort Wainwright areas. This unit may grade into, or have erosional contacts with other geologic formations and deposits near boundaries with bedrock hills to the north of the Chena River. The Chena Alluvium are dominated by braided river deposits of the historical Tanana River.
